Crown Hair is built on the experience and passion of Mark Jones and Kathy Gilbert. Our team is made up of skilled and creative hair stylists who work to their strengths and value collaboration.
We make sure you leave our salon with great hair. Mark is an expert cutter who understands the weight and texture of hair, and the relativity of a haircut to the face and the body. Kathy truly appreciates the relationship between colour and texture, hair and skin. Their deep knowledge and mastery are freely shared across the team. Every cut and colour we give at Crown Hair is tailored to show you to best advantage.
Great hair takes time, which is why appointments for haircuts are for a full hour. We consult with you to make sure you are getting not just the cut you ask for, but the cut you really want. We give the right information so you can make good choices. And we work collaboratively so your cut works perfectly with your colour. It’s our goal to create the best result for you, every time.
Kathy and Mark trained at a hugely innovative time, when iconic hairdresser Vidal Sassoon had revolutionised the hairdressing industry with the five point cut and the asymmetric bob. Inspired by art and architecture, his haircuts were beautiful and distinctive. This fresh and daring approach was about a new freedom and modernity and a spirit of collaboration. Vidal was brave enough to keep things simple, and to let each client’s hair and lifestyle inform the hairstyle he created.
We take a lot from Vidal and we add to that a contemporary flexibility. We absolutely know the rules, and you can trust us to know when to break them. We care about fashion but we’re not faddish. What’s more important is what’s relevant to every individual client.
We love hair in all its magnificent variety, and we celebrate the possibilities it offers for self-expression. Every head of hair inspires us to create a look that’s beautiful, and that’s exactly what we love to do.
It’s hard to pinpoint just where we began, because we’ve known each other and worked together on and off for around 20 years. If pressed we might say it started with a quiet after work drink at the Albury in the late 1980s.
MJ: Back then I was cutting at Garland and Garland in Paddington, which was raw and loud and outrageous, and Kathy was a colourist up at Antony Whitaker in Woollahra - very stylish and polished. Very different places, but what they had in common was a real wealth of experience.
KG: They were exciting and innovative places to be. And it grew from there…
Since those heady days, we have honed our crafts at some of Sydney’s edgiest and most beautiful salons. Our paths crossed and crossed again as we grew into our careers, and in 2011 we knew it was time to do our own thing. We are proud to lead our polished team of professionals. At Crown Hair we have created the sort of place we want to work in, and that our clients love.
